Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae of Professor Mariëtte Lowes
 
Mariette Lowes qualified as a pharmacist in 1973 at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and also obtained a Honours, a Masters and Doctoral degree in Industrial Pharmacy form the same university.  She obtained a Master of Business Administration at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1994 and a Master of Health Profession Education in 2004 from the Maastrict University, the Netherlands.
 
She was employed as an analytical pharmacist at the Potchefstroom University and the Transvaal Hospital Services and later employed at the College of Pharmacy at the Technikon Pretoria as a Senior Lecturer and the Head of Department of Pharmaceutics.  IN the early 90’s she served as the Manager of Education at the South African Pharmacy Council and in 1997 she was appointed as the head of the new School of Pharmacy at the Technikon Pretoria.  In 19999 she was appointed as the Dean of a new Faculty of Health Sciences at the same institution.  For the last two hears she served in the position as Vice-Rector: Academic at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University.
 
Mariette as an elected member of the South African Pharmacy Council for the last ten years and serves on several of the Councils’ Committees.  She represented pharmacy on the National Standards Body for Health and Social Welfare and is the Chairperson of the SGB for Pharmacy, serves on the Board of the Chemical and Industry (SETA) and holds membership of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa and various other national and international educational and professional societies.  She is currently a Director of the Board of “Bone SA” a Section 21 suppliant of human bone products.
 
She was instrumental in the development of the competency standards for pharmacists and pharmacist’s assistants for the pharmacy profession in South Africa.  She initiated, developed and implemented a problem-based learning curriculum for pharmacy, at the combined Schools of Pharmacy at MEDUNSA/Technikon Pretoria, based on competency standards.  As visiting professor, she assisted the James Cook University in Townsville, Australia with the design of an integrated pharmacy curriculum.
 
She served on the World Health Organisations’ pharmacy curriculum design team, acted as moderator for international conferences and the National Research Foundation.  She is the author and co-author of several publications in accredited and popular journals.  She participated in various national and international conferences and undertook several investigative visits to overseas pharmaceutical industries and universities.
